Reading to Relax

Reading to Relax
Generally "getting a little R&R" means rest and relaxation, but it can also mean reading and relaxation. Reading an enjoyable novel in the evening or at night before to go to bed can take your mind away from the frustrations of the day.

If you are an habitual reader or not sure what you would like, visit your local library and ask the librarian for suggestions. You may be asked what your hobbies are or what you enjoy doing. I like cooking and often read novels called culinary mystery's. Yes, there really is such a thing. One of my favorite authors in this genre is Selma Eichler. Her PI protagonist is Desiree Shapiro, the plumpish widow of a policeman who offers you food as she interrogates you. Other authors are Diane Mott Davidson, her 'Goldy' Schultz is a caterer/amateur detective with a teenaged son who feels his mother deliberately sets out to embarrass him at every turn. There is Tamar Myers 'Magdalena Yoder', a Mennonite Pennsylvania Dutch innkeeper who always finds herself knee deep in trouble. Another of my favorite authors is Cleo Coyle, but don't let the name fool you, Cleo Coyle is author Alice Alfonsi and her husband, Marc Cerasini. Together they write a series called The Coffee House Mysteries about a barista who lives in Greenwich Village and has an unfortunate knack for finding dead bodies.

You will be able to find some of the print books as ebooks also. There is no deep thinking in any of these books just good reading and recipes.
Author Nora Roberts writes wonderful traditional romance novels. But she also writes under the name J. D. Roberts and pens a futuristic detective/romance series, called the 'In Death' novels. The first of the series is NAKED IN DEATH, the book is old but still available. Tough New York top cop Eve Dallas (she has no memory of her life before the age of 8) and murder suspect Roarke (one name only) monied, the face of a poet and just barely on the right side of the law, are destined to be together. J. D. Robb has a huge following, including yours truly. I think the series has slowed down and taken a slight turn from the original books, but they still grab you. If you have not tried these books because you like romance novel's not to worry Eve and Roark take care of that, in between sometimes gruesome murders.

Whatever your interests, you can find a book that's just right for you. Start reading and be taken away from the busy humdrum of every day life for an hour or so. Sometimes that's all the time you need to relax or get your spark back for the next daily go-round.
